Our research into search engine optimisation (SEO) supports the argument that you should never buy or use a domain with a hyphenated name for your web site, such as myname-hull-somthingelse.co.uk. Successful websites just don’t use hyphens.
Using a hyphen ( – ) doesn’t work on so many levels. You can’t dictate the name of your business easily over the phone, people can’t find the hyphen (even when reading from a business card), and it looks cheap, crass and cumbersome. And most importantly search engines, such as Google really don’t like the use of hyphens.
